SAFE-T-ALERT™ MEETS TOUGHER UL STANDARDS FOR CO ALARMS

(Volo, IL – January 13, 2003) Underwriter Laboratories has recently revised their UL 2034 standard for carbon monoxide alarms. Though the revisions are not enforced until May 14, 2003 and November 14, 2003 MTI Industries’ Safe-T-Alert™ CO alarms have already passed all the necessary testing and are listed to the updated standard.
The revised May 14th UL Standard requires CO alarms to pass additional tests that demonstrate improved resistance to acetone, ammonia, ethanol, toluene and Trichloroethane outgases. All of these gases are typically released during construction of new RVs and homes from carpeting, flooring, paint, adhesives and other construction materials. The problem with these outgases is that they might cause an alarm. According to MTI President Tom Wisniewski, passing this test confirms that the Safe-T-Alert™ CO alarm design will not cause nuisance alarms.
“MTI has always looked to the future in the design and manufacture of alarms and other products,” said Wisniewski. “Supplying CO Alarms to the RV industry required us to address the outgas issue many years ago, we are happy to see the standards being revised to bring all CO alarms into compliance to solve this potential alarm issue. The RV industry has always led the way in bringing the most reliable products to market, now the residential CO alarm market will benefit from some of these developments as well.”
Some states, including New York and New Jersey, have recently passed laws requiring CO alarms be installed in new homes during their construction.
Since 1994, the RVIA has required CO alarms be installed in any new motorized RV, with a generator or generator ready. “UL listed Carbon Monoxide alarms for
use in RV’s have to undergo additional testing that residential models are not required to pass, but it is great to see that the reliability proven in the RV market can now be expanded into everyone’s home,” said Wisniewski.
The November 14, 2003 revision addresses potential false alarms from portable phone, cell phone and walkie-talkie products, which are used frequently in the RV industry. The new test requires CO alarms to remain silent when exposed to 866 MHz and 910 MHz radio signals.
